Dear West Bend ,
On September 15, Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) were installed at The Queensway and Ellis Avenue. APS advise pedestrians who are blind, visually impaired, or deaf-blind when they have the right-of-way to cross at a signalized intersection and in which direction they may cross the intersection. The APS push button must be depressed for at least three seconds and adjust to ambient sound levels.
As part of the ongoing Anti-Black racism initiatives by the community, a petition was submitted to the City calling for the renaming of the Dundas Street West. The street’s namesake, Scottish politician Henry Dundas, was involved in delaying the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade, causing more than half a million more Black people to be enslaved in the British Empire. At the Executive Committee meeting on September 23, City staff will put forth recommendations that the City host public consultations on the renaming of Dundas Street and on future street namings and renamings, monumental removals and additions, reinterpretations and revocations and report back to Executive Committee in the first quarter of 2021. The City continues to expand upon its Resurgence Plan. Over the coming days, the City will be working with the Province to reduce social gathering limits, enhance enforcement on existing restrictions and to expand the mandatory mask requirements. On Saturday, September 12, Toronto’s first voluntary COVID isolation centre opened. Public Health case managers will offer this stay for Covid-19 infected individuals. . People who choose to stay at the centre will receive their own room, meals and daily contact with Toronto Public Health to help guide them through the 14-day isolation period required of people diagnosed with COVID-19.
In honour of the front line workers serving our city in these difficult times, the City has proclaimed September 14 as Champions of Care Day. On this day we also pause to remember those workers who paid the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives to COVID-19.
The City of Toronto has issued an urgent appeal to the federal and provincial governments to create 3,000 permanent, affordable homes, within the next 24 months, for homeless, vulnerable and marginalized residents. These investments will support the Council-approved HousingTO 2020-2030 Action Plan aimed at helping more than 340,000 households in Toronto over the next 10 years. The full details of the plan, as well as the breakdown of the funding request, can be found in the staff report “Addressing Housing and Homelessness Issues in Toronto through Intergovernmental Partnerships”.
