The Issue
For over 30 years, the Giraffe Building site at the bustling intersection of Bloor and Dundas in Toronto has stood stagnant, leaving an indelible mark of underuse and neglect. Known infamously as “the eyesore” at this major intersection, it has attracted attention for its troubling persistence of decay (Toronto Star, June 21st, 2025). For residents, daily commuters, and visitors, this site reflects a missed opportunity for transformation into a space that represents the vibrant and innovative spirit of Toronto.
The urgency for a new development plan cannot be overstated. Toronto has grown exponentially over the last three decades, with many neighbourhoods undergoing successful regeneration. However, the lack of a concrete plan for the Giraffe Building site underscores a need for immediate action and attention.
We demand the following actions:
- Opening up to innovative architectural proposals, engaging with developers who are committed to sustainable and inclusive designs, including affordable housing options.
- Establishing a firm and transparent timeline for construction.
- Transforming the “ugliest corner in Toronto” into a centerpiece of progressive urban planning.
- Including residential spaces, retail areas, community parks, and public art installations to enhance local business opportunities and provide social amenities.
The revitalization of the Giraffe Building site offers a chance to transform one of Toronto’s most notorious intersections into a landmark of community pride.
