West Bend Community Association March 2018 Newsletter

Happy Springtime!

Hello West Benders,

We are in the final days of Winter! In about a month, the High Park cherry blossoms will be in bloom and our thoughts will turn to actively greening the West Bend.

Interested in creating your own Rain Garden?  Local community organizations will be co-hosting a workshop with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority on Wednesday, April 25th.  Thinking that plain spot in your yard could use a tree?  Pre-register to pick one up for free at this year’s Wanda Street Party on Saturday, June 9th.  Details will be available in the next few weeks.

Trees aren’t the only things springing up around the neighbourhood.  We’re getting more buildings. One large one under construction by the subway station and two more proposed up by the Junction.  Public meetings are occurring now and the Community feedback period is open.  Once the shovels are in the ground, its too late to have any say on whether there should be less height, more affordable units, a smaller billboard, bigger sidewalks, or anything else that’s important to you.

Were you aware that electoral ward boundaries have changed?  The West Bend neighbourhood will no longer be a part of a ‘downtown’ ward as we become the eastern-most neighbourhood of a ward that includes High Park to the Humber River, all the way up to railroad tracks just north of Dundas.  We will be selecting a different City Councillor and a new Member of Provincial Parliament this year!

Come to our monthly meeting this Wednesday to find out more!

In this Newsletter:

  • Meeting this Wednesday

West Bend March 2018 Meeting
Wednesday, March 21st @7:00pm (This Wednesday!)
Indian Road Crescent Public School – Second floor staff room

Our regular monthly meeting, where we sync up on events of the past month, and plan for the months ahead.  Heads up; 2 local-impacting elections this year, and no incumbents for the West Bend in either.  Let’s do what we can to make sure we have good representation!

Changing Lanes: The City of Toronto’s Review of Laneway Suites – March 29 – Community Meeting

Hello all,

Thank you to everyone who has contacted us to share their thoughts, questions and opinions on Changing Lanes: The City of Toronto’s Review of Laneway Suites.

This email includes information about our next community meeting to be held on Thursday, March 29th. Details below.

Study Background

On July 4, 2017, City Council directed the City Planning Division, in consultation with a number of City Divisions, to study the potential to permit laneway suites within Toronto and East York District, consult with the community, and report on a potential implementation strategy in 2018.

On November 30, 2017, the City hosted a meeting to discuss and receive your comments and questions on considering whether Laneway Suites are an appropriate form of new residential units in the Neighbourhoods. This meeting was well attended, with significant constructive commentary provided by those in attendance.

On February 24, 2018, the City hosted an invite-only meeting for Residents’ Associations in the study area. The meeting was attended by a range of representatives from Residents’ Associations from across the Toronto and East York area. At the meeting, City Planning staff presented a background of our work on the Changing Lanes initiative and shared a set of draft guidelines intended to guide the form, scale, and location of laneway suites for discussion and comment.

Throughout this initiative, we have continued to work with a range of City Staff, neighbourhood and community stakeholders, and your local Councillors on refining, and drafting a comprehensive set of principles and a host of requirements to regulate the construction of laneway suites. Comments received from our consultation meetings and other correspondence with residents have continued to refine and clarify the draft guidelines and policies.

At our next meeting on March 29th, 2018, we will present updated draft Guidelines, draft Policies, and draft Zoning By-law amendments.

For more information, please visit the following website: www.toronto.ca/changinglanes

Meeting Details

The meeting notice is attached. Please feel free to circulate among your communities. An advertisement for the meeting will appear in NOW Magazine and has been mailed out to those who contacted us and provided a mailing address.

Details of the meeting are as follows:

Date: Thursday, March 29, 2018

Time: 6:30 – 9 p.m. (Presentation at 7 p.m.)

Place: Metro Toronto Convention Centre: 222 Bremner Blvd – Room 203

The meeting will begin at 6:30pm with an open house where City staff from a number of Divisions will be on hand to answer questions.  A presentation summarizing the study background and proposed policies, guidelines and review process for Laneway Suites will commence promptly at 7:00pm. Following the staff presentation there will be a question and comment period for the remainder of the meeting.

Contact Us

If you are interested in the Changing Lanes initiative and have any comments or questions, or would like to schedule a meeting or phone call with City Planning staff to discuss our work on laneway suites, please respond to this email or contact me directly.

If you are unable to make it to the meeting on March 29th, please send us an email and we can provide you with a copy of the presentation and any other materials provided at the meeting for your review.

We look forward to seeing you on March 29th.
