Hello West Benders,
Hope you are all enjoying the final days of summer!
With Fall upon us, a new session for the West Bend Community Association begins! We have a busy year ahead of us. Our first meeting of the session will take this coming Wednesday, September 20th at 7pm in our regular location, the second floor staff room at Indian Road Crescent Public School. Everyone receiving this newsletter is welcome and encouraged to attend. Bring a neighbour too!
One major initiative this fall will be the rebuilding of the irrigation system in the Railside Gardens. Metrolinx has verbally approved funds for the community to reconstruct the system that was destroyed when the noise wall was installed. We are currently waiting on the landscape contractor to finish the bed as specified in their contract, and then the West Bend Community Association will assume responsibility for long-term maintenance. If you would like to participate as a volunteer then reply to this newsletter, or even better, drop by Wednesday’s meeting.
We have several projects that will be carrying over from last year including our Emergency Preparedness initiative. As several weather events of this past summer have reminded us, it is important to have an emergency readiness plan. Many locals are working to develop this additional layer of safety and security especially for the vulnerable in our community, and your voluntary participation would be most welcome. Stay tuned for more information about how you can get involved and be a part of this important initiative.
There are property developments in the neighbourhood entering the planning and construction phases. In particular, work looks ready to begin on the site just north of the Crossways; and a new mid/high-rise development is planned on Dundas northwest of the Dundas, Dupont, Annette, Old Weston intersection (DDAOWi). On the topic of the DDAOWi itself, we are looking forward to the City hosting its first public consultation this Fall regarding substantial safety improvements proposed for this difficult and dangerous intersection.
Construction begins later this month on a significant refresh of Chelsea Playground. Thanks again to all community members who contributed their time and input to help develop the final plans, which you can view here.
In October, the West Bend Community Association will hold its Annual General Meeting. We will elect our executive team and establish our mandate for the coming session. If you would like to play a role in the governance of the Association, please make plans to attend on Wednesday, October 18.
